Discovering a Love of Learning Through Online Education
By Dana Pfrangle - April 13th, 2021

In 2018, I had just started a new position at a large organizational psychology firm that manages employee assistance and behavioral health managed care programs for organizations across the U.S. I found myself surrounded by professionals who had obtained master’s degrees and doctorates—an environment that really celebrated continual learning. After just three months, I decided to pursue a master’s degree in human resources.
How I Chose CSU Global
I spent about a month researching various online programs, and I decided to enroll in CSU Global’s Master’s in Human Resource Management program. As an alumni of CSU Fort Collins, I was thrilled to be eligible for discounted tuition at CSU Global! Another strong selling point for me was that CSU Global’s HR Management program is SHRM-aligned.
During my time at CSU Fort Collins, I struggled during my first year. I spent the rest of my time working hard to improve my GPA. I did very well, but it still wasn’t quite enough to reach a 3.0. (In hindsight, I would have benefited from taking a year off between high school and college. I did learn a lot from the experience, so I don’t consider it a loss.)
When applying to CSU Global, my sub-3.0 undergraduate GPA meant I had to write a short essay and take an aptitude test to get accepted. Truthfully, I felt a little embarrassed about having to prove I was smart enough to get accepted. However, I received above average scores on both, and was accepted early 2019.
Going Global With Global
I truly enjoyed the variety of courses in my Master’s of HR Management program. But, the best experience of my program was traveling to London with a group of amazing students from CSU Global. We visited several businesses in London that focused on each of our interests–HR, finance, marketing, international business, etc. I was fortunate to make lasting friendships with my fellow students that live throughout the United States. Luckily, we were able to do this before the COVID-19 pandemic started. I sincerely hope CSU Global is able to offer this experience again some day; it was life-changing for me!
My Advice to Others
Thanks to CSU Global and a group of supportive mentors, I’ve discovered a deep love of learning that I didn’t have when I was younger. I’m currently studying for my SHRM-CP (Society of Human Resource Management – Certified Professional) and CEBS (Certified Employee Benefit Specialist) certifications. I’m also considering a PhD in Organizational Development! But before I commit to another four years of school, I’m going to take some time to focus on the amazing new job I landed around the same time I graduated with my master’s degree.
Don’t let your past dictate your future! I let my undergraduate grades keep me from thinking I could be successful in graduate school. I am grateful to my mentors; they saw my potential before I recognized it in myself.
